Coalport

John Rose founded in 1795 the original Coalport factory in a city of that name in Shropshire, England. They expanded and acquired other potteries as a result of their success in the early 19th century. Rose and his firm garnered acclaim for their technical improvements in manufacturing and leadless glazing.

The company further enhanced its reputation at the Great Exhibition of London in 1851. There Coalport displayed an elaborate table service commissioned by Queen Victoria as a gift to Tsar Nicholas I of Russia. Despite this, the company sometimes struggled with its finances, going into receivership in 1875. The company reopened under the name “Coalport China Company” and eventually greatly developed its export trade in the 1890’s.

In 1967 the Wedgwood Group purchased Coalport China and it ceased all production under the Coalport name.

Despite their closure, Coalport China has maintained its reputation for having crafted elegant china. Their bone china dinnerware continues to grace dining tables in homes around the world.
