Wedgwood

Josia Wedgwood gave his name to the company he founded in 1765 for the production of earthenware dishes. In this they were very successful because they made dishes with a bone china-like appearance at a low cost. This accounted for the rapid increase in sales in England and around the world.

Only in 1895 did the company begin producing fine bone china and luxury goods. Classical Egyptian, Greek and Roman designs inspired their artisans in many of their patterns. For instance, their designers especially relied on classical motifs in the production of Jasperware. This is an unglazed stoneware with a cameo-like qualities. In time, the Wedgwood name became known for this line of unique giftware and luxury goods.

The Wedgwood family maintained control of the company until 1968 and in 1986 sold it to Waterford.
